Pulmonary Fuction Tests (PFTs) are commonly done in our office. PFTs provide very important information about an individual’s lung capacity. They take anywhere from 5-15 minutes to perform. There are 3 major tests performed. The first, called spirometry, helps to determine if the bronchial tubes are constricted, such as in conditions like asthma or emphysema. The second, called lung volumes, measures the size of the lungs. The lung volume can be diminished in conditions such as pulmonary fibrosis. Finally, diffusing capacity, helps us determine how well oxygen is transferring from the lung into the bloodstream. These tests simply involve breathing through a mouth piece into a machine. The medical assistant will talk you through it. The tests do not hurt and there are no needles or x-rays involved. These tests are often performed on a first visit to help us get an overall understanding of an individuals lung function.
